Intelligent Mail Indicia Mandate

 

IMI Compliance Timeline

The U.S. Postal Service has completed its transition away from legacy Information Based Indicia (IBI) technology and now requires Intelligent Mail Indicia (IMI) for postage meters.

Key dates to be aware of include:

  • June 30, 2024: All non‑IMI (IBI) postage meters were officially decertified by USPS. No new IBI devices may be placed into service.
  • December 31, 2024: Most non‑IMI meters were required to be withdrawn from active service and are considered inactive in USPS systems. 
  • June 30, 2025: Postage indicia printed by decertified, inactive systems is no longer considered valid for mailing or for postage refunds.
  • Through June 30, 2026: Certain mailers may qualify for limited extensions under specific circumstances, allowing additional time to complete their migration to IMI‑compliant solutions.

WHAT IS THE IMI MANDATE? 
The Postal Service has required an update to all postage meters in the industry. To be compliant, your postage meter must produce an Intelligent Mail Indicia (IMI).

IMI technology supports key objectives for the Postal Service such as improved security, accuracy and customer experience. 


WHO DOES THIS AFFECT? 
Any organization that uses postage meters to send mail and/or packages. 


WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW
Organizations that have not yet transitioned to an IMI‑compliant postage solution should confirm their current compliance status and understand any applicable extension timelines. Moving to an IMI‑compliant system ensures continued USPS acceptance, access to modern mailing features, and long‑term regulatory compliance.
